How to tell if you need to find a new bubby
a. He gives you the "wait here" sign and you are still on the boat?
b. He "forgets" to close your dry suit zipper?
c. When you give him the out of air signal, he passes you his snorkel?
d. When you indicate you are low on air, he writes on his slate "I'll get
you some" and swims off?
e. You give him the "OK" signal and he gives you the finger?
WIN TICKETS TO LIDS 2010
We start this week’s deco with a competition which is open to anyone who reads it so please pass this on to your friends. In conjunction with BSAC we have 2 LIDS 2010 tickets to give away to the lucky winner (Face value £10.50 each). All you have to do is answer either of the following questions correctly:
- One of our divers is intent on testing the rescue skills of all of our instructors. We believe this is intentional as he wants his own column in the weekly deco. Can you name this diver?
If that’s too difficult give this one a go:
- Name the top diving Speaker appearing at the show, who starred in his
own TV series and actually does have a column in ‘Dive’ Magazine.
Email your answer to LIDS Competition before next Thursday 11th March. The winner will be announced at the Thursday meeting and notified by email. For further details on this year’s London Dive show at Excel London on 27-28 March see way down below. (see below for details)

The Rez 5th/6th June
We have had 2 members say they are interested in this and I have sent an enquiry to see if any places are left if anyone else fancies going.
A trip is being organised to The Rez 5/6th June (http://www.therezuk.net/index.htm). For those who don't know it, it's an underground reservoir 40mtr x 20mtrs. It's not deep, maximum of 2mtrs but in complete darkness. It can be dived by anyone with more than 5 open water dives in a drysuit.Good for a different photo op, or if you just fancy something different. Food is available on site, also, if you want to make a weekend of it you can camp on site. You will need to bring full cylinders as they don't list air on the web.
A total of 8 people are needed to make it viable (12 would be better), maximum cost if only 8 people would be £22, if 12 would be £14.00. For that you get all day 10:00am till 16:00.
Lectures
This week’s Dive Leader lecture is Basic Life Support. As this will also be useful to all trainees it has been decided to just offer the one lecture this week, open to everyone, Ocean Diver trainees and qualified divers alike, in the crèche starting at 7.30 prompt
The facebook group now has 12 members. Details of all forthcoming trips and social events are there. All members can post messages or photographs. Visit Here
Social events
A party of 12 met for a very enjoyable evening at the Courtyard on Friday night, with excellent food and stimulating company. There was talk of past club weekends to Paris and suchlike, and a possible future fortnight in Oz. (Although the latter was after a few bottles of wine had been imbibed) If there is any interest in a weekend theatre trip to London I’ll look into it. Let me know the kind of shows which appeal ( keep it clean Joe)

GET INTO GEAR FOR LIDS 2010
Whether a seasoned pro or a novice diver, the London International Dive Show on 27 and 28 March is the best place to get your 2010 season off to a cracking start!
There’ll be over 200 companies showing the latest diving gear and clothing, holiday destinations, training opportunities plus much more. And, with two free diving pools – one for first timers and another for testing the latest technical kit – a free programme of exhibitor and speaker presentations – underwater photographic galleries plus a digital photography clinic, there’ll be plenty to see and do.
LOOK WHO’S TALKING
Three new additions to the line-up of guest presenters are arctic explorer and Oceans presenter and author Paul Rose, Mike Rutzen, one of the world’s best-known shark divers, and a perennial show favourite Monty Halls, who will update us on his latest adventures including his recent 'Lions and Sharks' Tour in South Africa.
Dr Andrea 'Queen of Mantas' Marshall will be coming over from Mozambique to talk about her work, the subject of a much-discussed BBC Natural World documentary recently. Californian Andrea moved to Mozambique seven years ago, and was the first person in the world to gain a manta ray PhD. She is at the forefront of efforts to protect the rays through research into their biology and behaviour.
There are plenty of treats in store for wreck and tech divers at LIDS, too. Already confirmed as speakers are top technical divers Teresa Telus and Leigh Bishop, Mark Powell and Jack Ingle. Teresa' talk about the wrecks of Truk Lagoon was a hit at DIVE 2009, and this time she is joined by leading deep-wreck photographer Leigh Bishop.
Back to the animals, and award-winning director John Boyle will preview his latest underwater film, Freaks of the Sea, while shark expert Richard Peirce turns his attention to great whites and blues in the Mediterranean.
MORE TO SEE AND DO …
Visit the Try-Dive Pool, where freediver Marcus Greatwood and his NoTanx team will be conducting breath-hold demonstrations and challenges, with prizes for spectators who back the winners! Alternatively the Technical Pool allows more advanced divers to try out rebreathers, DPVs and other kit.
Divers keen to improve their own lens-work will be welcomed at Saeed Rashid and Paul Duxfield's Digital Clinic as well as the BSoUP stand for one-to-one advice.
For more information, an up-to-date programme of activities or to book advance tickets to the show visit www.diveshows.co.uk. Tickets cost £7.50 in advance (under 14s go free) or £10.50 on the door. Anyone buying six or more tickets together will benefit from a further reduction £1 reduction on the price of each adult ticket.
And Finally .....
Spare a thought, when you’re tucked up in your nice warm beds this week, for 2 of our members who are out in the cold.
Eóin is in the depths of Russia competing in the Baikal ice marathon where temperatures are around -19 Celsius
Wendy is floating (I hope) somewhere off the South Coast enduring more tough physical training in preparation for disasters at sea. I need a lie down.
