Do I need a scuba refresher?

If you already have a scuba diving qualification (e.g. Ocean Diver, Sports Diver, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver) but have not dived for a while a scuba refresher in a swimming pool with Marlin Sub-Aqua Club will help you get back into diving! We welcome all scuba divers regardless of who they are certified with (BSAC, PADI, SAA, SSI, GUE etc).

What happens on a scuba refresher?

Each scuba refresher starts with a brief introduction to diving techniques, and the equipment that you will be using, under the supervision of one of our instructors. We will supply all the equipment you need, and will provide any assistance you need with it. Your instructor will help you assemble the scuba kit, and go through the basic skills before you enter the water.

Once you have changed into your swimming gear and an old tee-shirt/shorts you will move to the swimming pool. In stages you will slowly start to breathe underwater again. You will practice basic diving skills such as buoyancy control, finning technique, mask removal, replacement and clearing, regulator recovery, and breathing from an alternative source (octopus). Your instructor will demonstrate each skill first, and offer suggestions for improvement where necessary.

The aim of the scuba refresher is for women and men to practice the scuba diving skills they already have in a safe and fun environment. The session includes a scuba refresher certificate (subject to satisfactory performance) and you can apply for a qualification card for an addtional fee if required.

Frequently asked questions

When and where do scuba refreshers take place?

All scuba refreshers take place on Thursday nights from 8 pm to 10 pm at Pingles Leisure Centre, Avenue Road, Nuneaton, CV11 4LX. We will meet you at Reception but if you are early ask for directions to “the scuba diving club”.

What does it cost?

A scuba refresher costs £50. This includes 60 minutes of dry practical work and 60 minutes in the pool.

How old do I need to be to have a scuba refresher?

Scuba refreshers are available to anyone aged 14 and over. For participants under the age of 18 a responsible adult must be present for the whole of the session. They do not need to be in the water.

Can I come on my own?

Yes of course! We are a friendly club and you can be assured of a warm welcome.

Do I need to be fit to do a scuba refresher?

Before your scuba refresher you will be asked to read and complete a simple declaration form, which you can see at Scuba Refresher Medical and Responsibility Declaration. You do not need to be particularly fit and the screening form is just to ensure we are aware of any adjustments we need to make for you. Don’t worry about having to lift heavy equipment, we will be able to help with that.

How do I book more spaces?

There are two spaces available for each date but you need to book them individually. If you have a larger group than two or if one of the slots is full please contact us and we’ll confirm instructor availability prior to booking.

Can I have a refund?

Seven full days notice is required if you wish to cancel with a refund.
